UFC Singapore is in the books but that doesn’t mean our Saturday of combat sports are done by any means. This evening Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev meet for the second time in what could turn out to be an epic rematch. The first meeting was a close but a controversial decision in favor of Andre Ward 114-113 on all three scorecards. In watching the bout again, I scored the fight in favor of Kovalev 115-112. In case anyone forgot the action from the first fight, here it is with my personal round by round scorecard.
In the aftermath of the fight, many different people saw the fight many different ways. In all reality, like any close fight, it could have gone to either guy. At least in this instance, we get another crack at it. In my opinion both have the abilities to win the fight. If Andre Ward wants to win, he cannot start as slow as he did last time. He needs to work the body early to wear down the rangy Kovalev. Body shots early and often should cause Kovalev’s right hand to drop and open up space for Ward’s lightning quick jab and left hook. If Kovalev wants to win the fight he must continue to let his thunderous jab go but also mix in the right hand. He dropped Ward in the second with the right hand, but seemed trigger shy for the rest of the fight. I see Kovalev avenging his loss by landing the right early and often, eventually scoring a KO in round 8.
Regardless of the outcome, I am as excited as can be for this matchup of P4P superstars. Don’t blink, this should be a candidate for fight of the year.
