While I’m being a little facetious, I’m convinced that the general public had no idea the Prodigy was fighting Siver this weekend. The likely reason for this? Well, BJ Penn is 0-4-1 in his last 5 fights, and he has one win over his last 8. That win was over a very aged Matt Hughes (Prayers up for Matt).
BJ Penn is one of the earliest faces of the UFC and at one point was considered to be the most dangerous fighter in the UFC. While I’ve never been a big fan of Penn, he is one of the most respected UFC fighters of all time, especially before Frankie Edgar exposed him in 2010. BJ does deserve credit for being one of the first fighters to have a well rounded skill set, but that is normally undermined by how little BJ cared about MMA. BJ had great BJJ, Great boxing, and decent wrestling all accompanied with a lack of heart and conditioning.
Unfortunately for BJ, as time passes he continues to get exposed for what he is. That is, a minimal effort fighter that isn’t prepared and doesn’t care. BJ is lucky to have fought during the early stages of the UFC. If BJ in his prime came up now I’m convinced he wouldn’t have any success against the top 5 fighters from any division.
BJ Penn was once a main event fighter that fans looked forward to seeing. Now he is the 5th fight on a free card with no promotion behind him. On June 25th, 2017 let’s watch BJ in what is likely his last fight in the UFC.
