Each time a fighter signs with Bellator there is usually an easy reason to figure out why they did so. Phil Davis and Ryan Bader really had no reason to believe they could beat Jon Jones and are similar in age to Jones, so they left. Rory MacDonald lost two in a row in the UFC and was vocal about feeling undervalued before he signed with Bellator. Others like Lorenz Larkin, Roy Nelson, and Matt Mitrione are names that we all know, but they didn’t really have the record or ranking of Davis, Bader, and McDonald.
Now that Gegard Mousasi, ranked 4th in the current UFC Middleweight rankings, signed with Bellator it might be time for the UFC and Dana White to do something to stop this. As more and more legitimate fighters sign with Bellator the UFC should start to worry. The only thing that differentiates the UFC and Bellator is it’s talent. That rings true for most professional sport leagues, but think about the number of fighters that fans actually follow in the UFC. My guess would be about 20 fighters differentiate the UFC from Bellator. Each time a current or former Bellator fighter beats a current or former UFC fighter it further shrinks the gap between the organizations.
So while we continue to watch Scott Coker say and do dumb shit, one thing that he has a solid track record of is his ability to get notable fighters to leave the UFC and sign with Bellator. Once he gets back on board with the tournament format for all divisions Bellator is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
