MMA Media Job Requirements: The Dark Side

Sometimes as a professional writer you have to write about things that don’t excite you. Essentially you are writing about them because you are obligated to do so as part of your job. In this case, writing about the next two free UFC cards really fits that bill. Of the two cards, there is only one fight I’m looking forward to. In an effort not to waste too much of my loyal readers time, I’m going to give my thoughts on those fights that have something at stake. Getting this article out of the way will also give me a chance to spend the rest of my man hours over the next two weeks focusing on all things UFC 214.

So, here are my thoughts on the calm on July 16, 2017 & July 22 2017, before the storm on July 29, 2017.

UFC Fight Night: Nelson vs. Ponzinibbio

This is an amazingly bad card. Never did I ever think I would say the fight I’m looking forward to most on this card is Cynthia Calvillo and Joanne Calderwood.

Gunnar Nelson vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio

I’d be lying if I said I know anything about Ponzinibbio. Because of that, and because of my love for Gunni’s nickname, I’m going with Gunni by sub round two.

No other fights on this card are really worth mentioning. If you want an opinion on the other fights you should probably read elsewhere.

UFC on Fox: Weidman vs. Gastelum

Solid main event that I’m genuinely looking forward to. My new favorite fighter Chase “The Vanilla Gorilla” Sherman is also on the card so that will keep my attention during the prelims. Other than that, I’m not majorly interested in this card either.

Chris Weidman vs. Kelvin Gastelum

This is a make or break fight for both guys. You can see how important the UFC thinks this fight is for Weidman since they scheduled it in his home town. For me though, I think Gastelum is going to overwhelm Weidman with his striking and win this fight. Gastelum has improved each time he steps in the cage. Once he gets his weight and his weed under control he could make a run at 185 or 170.

Thomas Almeida vs. Jimmie Rivera

This is a fight between two tiny humans and because of that I think the general public doesn’t appreciate it as much as they should. Thomas Almeida finishes fights and his only blemish is against Cody Garbrandt. This fight should put him in line to face a top 3 contender for the next title shot. I see Almeida winning by TKO round 1.

Well, I’m glad to to have gotten this out of the way. I don’t see the point of ever talking about these fights again other than Weidman vs. Gastelum unless someone decides to take the Justin Gaethje approach. Please make sure to stay tuned in to WBB Podcast and whitebeltbreakdown.com as there will be plenty of intriguing takes during the next few weeks.
